Free or low-cost care at VA hospitals is one of the many health care-related benefits granted to former military service members. The Veterans Health Administration manages health care for millions of veterans at more than 1,200 medical facilities across the country. Veterans who have completed at least 2 years of active duty since 1981 can qualify for VA health benefits. There are other conditions for veterans who were injured while serving.

Qualifying veterans can receive care at any VA medical center, including mental health services and inpatient treatment. Veterans can also access diagnostic and preventative care such as screenings and x-rays. In some cases, the VA may cover additional needs, such as rehabilitation care or prosthetics. Some prescriptions may be eligible for the VA prescription program, which offers reduced co-payments.
